ECTS grading system

ECTS (The European Credit Transfer System) makes higher education in Europe more transparent and supports the recognition of studies between institutions. It facilitates student mobility and helps design coherent curricula.

Wyższa Szkoła Biznesu-National Louis University (WSB-NLU) implemented the ECTS system in 2000, granting credits for all program components.

How are the ECTS credits calculated and distributed?

Each course has defined learning outcomes which describe what a student is expected to know, understand and able to do upon successful completion of the learning process. In addition, each course provides information about the types of learning activities used to achieve these outcomes (such as lectures, classes, seminars or workshops) as well as the estimated workload associated with them.

The workload indicates the total time students typically need to complete all learning activities (such as lectures, seminars, classes, student training, final tests and examinations) required to achieve the expected learning outcomes (see the example below) . 1 ECTS credit corresponds to 25-30 hours of student’s individual work. The curricula are are designed so that the total  workload for one academic year equals 60 ECTS credits.

Grade Distirbution

The student workload is systematically monitored. The estimation of the average workload is verified through student feedback and questionnaires. If the analysis indicates discrepancies between the expected and actual workload, the study program is adjusted accordingly.

Learning activities Hours students typically need to complete learning activities
Hours in class 60
Hours in class 90
Office hours 30
The sum 180
ECTS credits: 6.00
Notes 1 ECT is worth 25-30 hours workload.

mainly reading books, additional materials,
and preparing homeworks

Grading system

As the ECTS credits reflect the quantity of work, ECTS grades represent the quality of work. ECTS grading scale has been developed in order to help institutions to transpose grades into their own evaluation system.

Very good 5.0 B
Good plus 4.5 C
Good 4.0 D
