On 16-17 September 2023, a unique scientific conference took place within the walls of the Wyższa Szkoła Biznesu - National Louis University in Nowy Sącz under the aegis of the FONTES Association for Research on the Sources and Functions of Law. The event brought together leading experts in the field of law to share their knowledge and experience on extremism as a source of law for two days.
Extremism in the spotlight
Nowadays, the topic of extremism is becoming increasingly topical and important. In the context of global challenges such as terrorism, nationalism or radicalism on social media, the need to understand and appropriately address the problem is crucial. The FONTES conference provided an ideal venue for an in-depth analysis and discussion of this topic.
Conference programme
The first day of the conference was mainly devoted to lectures and speeches by experts. Speakers included WSB - NLU Prof. Tadeusz Mędzelowski, Ph.D., who spoke about the legal and ethical aspects of the activities of minority Churches and Religious Associations operating in Poland, and Prof. Paweł Chmielnicki, Ph.D., who discussed the draft law on the State Commission for Investigating Russian Influences as an example of authoritarian extremism.
The second day of the conference continued with speeches and panel discussions. Of particular interest were topics such as "Artificial intelligence as a tool to combat extremism online" and "Hate speech - extremism itself or punishment for it?". In addition, there was a presentation by our lecturer M.A. Alexandra Jiménez, who discussed the reporting of tax schemes.
Missed you at the conference? Nothing lost! WSB - NLU took care of that too! Each day was broadcast on the Youtube platform. You can find the transcript of the broadcast here:
The two-day FONTES conference was not only an opportunity to gain knowledge, but also to network and exchange experiences with experts from various fields of law. We hope that future editions will be equally fruitful and inspiring.
